Uth-TurnLaunched in 1999, Uth Turn is an innovative youth development program launched through New York Theological Seminary and the Fund for Community Leadership Development, Inc. A community-based collaborative effort, it supports urban youth by leveraging all of the community’s assets—churches, families, neighbors, youth-serving organizations, schools, and the criminal justice system—to promote social change. Uth Turn operates in 13 faith-based and school sites in high-need neighborhoods throughout metropolitan New York, including a site in Newark, New Jersey. Uth Turn works with young people ages 13-21 who are in the greatest need of intervention: teens with little or no parental supervision, gang members, truant youth, out-of-school youth, youth who have current or prior criminal cases, and youth "aging out" of Foster Care.

Using an assets-based curriculum, Uth Turn provides youth with a community-focused alternative to incarceration, community re-entry, behavior modification, risk factor reduction, and support programs. Group sessions are held three times per week and are convened by Facilitators—the majority of whom are MPS graduates from Sing Sing—with the requisite life experiences, training and education to serve as mentors, teachers, advocates, and guides. Working closely with churches, social services and law enforcement agencies, Uth Turn is able to provide positive community support networks for youth that includes spiritual direction, educational opportunities, employment preparation, and advocacy.

NYTS students may apply for a one-year internship with Uth Turn in which they are placed in one of the church sites to work in ministry along with the site Pastor and Facilitator. Student interns normally spend 25 hours per week in ministry at the site and earn 20 credits for the year by registering for:

  • 8 credits for Supervised Ministry (fulfilling all Supervised Ministry requirements)
  • 8 credits for the required two-course sequence, TMU225/6 Theology and Urban Uth Ministry I/II (see course description) that meets on Saturdays
  • 4 additional credits in courses offered in the regular NYTS curriculum.

All students accepted for the internship in Uth Turn receive scholarship support for tuition and fees for the year.
