The financial workshops/seminars are designed for ministry leaders to study personal, church and non-profit business concepts and practices in order to enhance the vision and ministry of the church. Emphasis includes: organizational structure, policies and procedures, financial processes, budgets, grant-writing, personnel issues, church debt, social media, personal finances, donor issues, stewardship philosophies, tax and legal issues, risk management facilities management, etc.

About the Count the Cost Initiative

 

Personal financial pressures severely limit the ability of seminary graduates to accept calls to Christian ministry and undermine the effectiveness of too many pastoral leaders. The Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment, Inc., created the Theological School Initiative to Address Economic Challenges Facing Future Ministers (ECFFM). The initiative’s aim is to encourage theological schools to examine and strengthen their financial and educational practices to improve the economic well-being of future pastors.

In November 2013, New York Theological Seminary was one of 67 theological schools across the country awarded a Lilly Endowment ECFFM research grant, in the amount of $250,000. In the spring of 2014, NYTS launched the “Count the Cost Initiative,” a three-year research project designed to study both student  indebtedness and the financial health of constituency churches, with the aim to
develop long-term strategies that improve the economic success of future ministers and partner churches. The CTCI project:

A. annually assesses the debt and employment of all NYTS entering and graduating students;

B. provides financial training/coaching/business planning initiatives for NYTS students through:

• financial training workshops/seminars and on-line resources
• assistance with developing “personal business plans”
• mentoring/coaching on personal-finance challenges

C. researches the financial and organizational characteristics and health of constituent churches;
and,

D. will develop a pilot technical assistance program for at least one constituency church that may lead to replicable and sustainable projects after the grant term ends December 2016.
