The Rev. Dr. Tamara Henry confirmed as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Academic Dean of New York Theological Seminary

New York, NY (August 1, 2020) – New York Theological Seminary is excited to announce the appointment of Rev. Dr. Tamara Henry as the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Academic Dean.

Dr. Henry has been an active faculty member at NYTS since 2014, serving as Assistant Professor of Religious Education, Director of the Master’s of Religious Education program, and Director of the Master’s of Arts in Youth Ministry program. In January of 2020, Dr. Henry became the interim Vice President of Academic Affairs and Academic Dean. As interim Dean, she helped lead the NYTS transition to online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She is currently leading the curriculum reviews for all seven of the degrees offered at NYTS to ensure that they are aligned with the newly adopted ATS standards.

I am immensely humbled and honored by the opportunity to serve New York Theological Seminary in this new capacity as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Academic Dean. I look forward to working with our president, faculty, students and staff as together we create a dynamic future for theological education at NYTS,” said Dr. Henry.

Dr. Henry holds three degrees from Fordham University: a Ph.D. in Religious Education, an M.A. in Religious Education and an M.S.W..  She holds a B.A. from Georgetown University. Professor Henry’s academic interests focus on how religiosity found in popular cultural artifacts, such as the hip hop movement, and womanist spirituality can generate theological pedagogies that are liberative for marginalized young people.

“Dr. Tamara Henry has been a blessing to the entire NYTS community. As an associate professor, her commitment to scholarship and student development has been an inspiration to our faculty, staff, students, and board. It has been an honor to work with her in the interim role since January, and I am excited to officially welcome her to the Senior Administrative team. I look forward with great anticipation to her continued positive impact on our community and our world,” said Rev. Dr. LaKeesha Walrond, President of NYTS.

Dr. Henry is an ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches U.S.A. and serves as the Minister of Youth at Lenox Road Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY.
