Alfred Johnson is a retired Bishop of the United Methodist Church (UMC) having presided over the then, 600 congregations for the New Jersey Episcopal Area that included the UMC congregations of New Jersey; Orange, Rockland, Sullivan Counties of New York and Pike County, PA. Fully ordained in 1976, he brings his 44 years in various roles of the practice of ministry to his teaching and research experience to NYTS. He currently teaches The Urban Leadership Seminar and the Practicum and Capstone tutorials for graduating Master of Religious Leadership and Administration (MARLA) students. He also directs CSPUR, the Center for the Study and Practice of Urban Religion, which is an urban research and program center at NYTS. Dr. Johnson’s research interest include: urban theology and practice for the now and future church, transformational leadership, organizational development, progressive inclusivity of persons of race, gender, culture and sexual orientation, urban community organization, urban congregational development and transformation.
