Dr. Efraín Agosto is Professor of New Testament Studies. From July 2018 to December 2019, he served as the Seminary’s Academic Dean. Before coming to NYTS in 2011, Professor Agosto was Academic Dean (2007-2011), Professor of New Testament and Director of the Programa de Ministerios Hispanos at Hartford Seminary (1995-2011). A Puerto Rican, Dr. Agosto was born in the Bronx and raised in Brooklyn. He has served in assistant and interim pastorates in Pentecostal, Baptist and Congregational churches in New York, Boston, and Hartford. From April to December 2013, he was interim pastor at the historic Second Spanish Baptist Church in East Harlem, New York. His book of sermons based on that experience, Preaching in the Interim (Judson Press) was published in September 2018. Currently, he is a lay member of a United Church of Christ congregation in Hartford. Dr. Agosto’s teaching and scholarship focuses on the Pauline Epistles, with special interest in the leadership of Paul and his associates. Among his publications are Servant Leadership: Jesus and Paul (Chalice Press, 2005), and a Spanish-language commentary on I and II Corinthians, Corintios (Augsburg Fortress Press, 2008). He also coedited, with Jacqueline Hidalgo, the volume Latinxs, the Bible and Migration (Palgrave Macmillan Press, 2018). In the past, Dr. Agosto served on the Steering Committee of the Hispanic Theological Initiative and represented NYTS on the Governing Board of the Hispanic Summer Program. He is currently the Chair of the Society of Biblical Literature Council, the professional organization of biblical scholars.
