Rev. Dr. Tony Tian-Ren Lin joins New York Theological Seminary as the new Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Research

Sociologist Specializing in Religion and Culture to Expand Seminary’s Urban Ministry

New York, NY (October 1, 2019) –Rev. Dr. Lakeesha Walrond, the President of New York Theological Seminary has announced the appointment of Rev. Dr. Tony Tian-Ren Lin as the new Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Research. Dr. Lin brings over two decades of faith-based leadership and a decade of management and advancement experience in higher education to NYTS. Previously, Dr. Lin has served as the Director of Fellows and a Research Scholar at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia and led multiple research projects including a Louisville Institute-funded project titled Race and Faith in Community and Churches. His own scholarship focuses on race, ethnicity, immigration and religion. His book, Prosperity Gospel Latinos and their American Dream is forthcoming with the University of North Carolina Press.

“I’m truly excited to serve as the New Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Research for the seminary under the leadership of President Walrond,” said Rev. Dr. Lin. “This is a pivotal moment for religions and Christianity in particular, and I’m elated for the opportunity to join such a talented and faithful group of faculty and staff at the seminary. Together, I’m confident that we will navigate through these turbulent times into a future of vibrant urban ministry that simultaneously aligns with its historic mission.”

As the new Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Research, Dr. Lin will be overseeing the research and development divisions at the seminary. The Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Research will be a new position at NYTS, providing creative and strategic ways to harness resources to deepen the seminary’s work.  Leveraging his academic experience in higher learning, Dr. Lin will bring visionary ideas to advance the mission of the seminary and expand its reach globally.

“As a sociologist specializing in religion and culture, Dr. Lin will be the visionary and pioneering leader that will advance NYTS by creating new opportunities for the institution,” said President Walrond. “Our rapidly changing world calls for innovative and flexible education that will train the spiritual leaders of the future. NYTS is poised to fill that role with its focus on urban ministry, training global leaders, and expanding its high quality yet flexible educational programs.”

Dr. Lin was born in Taiwan, grew up in Argentina and later immigrated to the United States. Growing up in several countries let him to be fluent in many languages and cultures. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University, a Master of Divinity and a Master of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Master and Doctorate in sociology from the University of Virginia. Dr. Lin is married to Bee-Ca Lin and they are the proud parents of Claudia, Calvin, and Clara.

Nueva York, NY (1 de Octubre de 2019) –La Rev. Dra. Lakeesha Walrond, Presidenta del Seminario Teológico de Nueva York (STNY), anunció el nombramiento del Rev. Dr. Tony Tian-Ren Lin como nuevo Vicepresidente de Avance Institucional e Investigación. El Dr. Lin aporta más de dos décadas de liderazgo en organizaciones religiosas y una década de experiencia en gestión y avance universitario. Anteriormente, el Dr. Lin se desempeñó como Director de Becarios y Académico de Investigación en el Instituto de Estudios Avanzados en Cultura de la Universidad de Virginia y dirigió múltiples proyectos de investigación, incluyendo un proyecto financiado por el Instituto Louisville titulado Raza y Fe en la Comunidad y las Iglesias. Su propio interés académico se enfoca en la raza, inmigración y religión. Su libro, Prosperity Gospel Latinos and Their American Dream, sera publicado por la University of North Carolina Press.

El Dr. Lin nació en Taiwán, creció en Argentina y luego emigró a los Estados Unidos. Crecer en varios países le permitió hablar con fluidez muchos idiomas y culturas. Tiene una licenciatura de la Universidad de Boston, una Maestría en Divinidad y una Maestría en Teología del Seminario Teológico de Princeton, y una Maestría y Doctorado en sociología de la Universidad de Virginia.
